Marshmallow root

The marshmallow root, also known as Althea officinalis, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Althea officinalis is a well-known herb which acts to sooth irritated and inflamed tissues. Marshmallow root is a demulcent herb with anti-inflammatory properties, and is used to treat inflamed or irritated mucous membranes. The marshmallow is demulcent and mucilaginous, containing up to 35% mucilage, (bassorin, althea mucilage). The mucilage in the herb soothes membranes, thereby reducing inflammation. Marshmallow root is optionally present in the pharmaceutical composition. The root soothes mucous membranes, and has been used for hundreds of years as a wound healer.
