Deodorant

Antiperspirant or deodorant compositions are employed on a substantial scale throughout the world in order to prevent or at least reduce the extent to which humans perspire. Deodorants are formulations that are designed either to mask malodour or to prevent or hinder its formation. Antiperspirant formulations are utilised in many applicator forms e.g. roll-ons, creams or soft solids, gels, firm sticks, aerosols and pump sprays. Typical deodorant compositions comprise topically acceptable compositions containing one or more agents that mask or inhibit the formation of unpleasant body odours; antimicrobial agents are widely used for this purpose. Such cosmetic antiperspirant and deodorant products may be available in a variety of product forms, for example as sticks, roll-on lotions, aerosols and pump spray formulations. Anti-microbial and deodorant compositions may function by a variety of means. When used upon the human body, such compositions may function by significantly reducing microbial numbers either by reducing perspiration or by directly affecting the micro-organisms on the body surface as represented by skin. Deodorant compositions having enhanced and stronger fragrance impact and directional increase in fragrance longevity are desired by the consumer. The fragrance masks the malodor that can occur at the axilla as a result of wetness and microbiological activity. Typical deodorant and antiperspirant products on the market use aluminium or aluminum-zirconium salts to prevent, or at least control, perspiration at the skin surface, particularly in the underarm, whilst often simultaneously providing a perceived degree of deodorancy. Antiperspirant and deodorant products can be formulated to contain materials to help sooth or minimize irritation of the underarm skin.
