Foot care
Personal hygiene is an important factor in the maintenance of a person's health. One particular area of a person's body which requires particular attention, with respect to cleanliness, is a person's feet. The health of humans feet has become an ever more priority in recent years with people spending an increased time in shoes while walking on concrete or other hard surfaces. Healthy feet are important to overall good health, however, they are frequently the object of injury, neglect, and/or abuse. A variety of skin diseases can afflict the skin of a person's feet resulting in undesirable and possibly dangerous infections. Many people suffer various foot-related ailments. These disorders range in severity from minor irritations to major dermatological problems. Most foot infections occur between the toes and/or between the toes and the front of the sole of the foot. Athlete's foot is a skin disease, usually occurring between the toes, which is believed currently caused by a fungus. The fungus most commonly attacks the feet because shoes create a warm, dark, and humid environment which encourages fungus growth. Athlete's foot may invade to the soles of the feet in between the toes and the toenails. It can also be spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch the infection and then touch themselves elsewhere. The organisms causing athlete's foot may persist for long periods. Foot problems are particularly problematic for diabetics because diabetics often lose sensation in their feet. This loss of sensation the feet often leads to ulceration. Diabetic persons are particularly vulnerable to foot infection and the resulting foot ulcers. Because of blood circulation problems caused by their disease, diabetics must be especially diligent in caring for their feet. Many diabetics gradually lose feeling in their feet and may develop foot ulcers without even being aware of their presence until they have become infected. In extreme cases the ulceration may eventually lead to an amputation of the diabetic's foot. The foot problems typically associated with the disease of diabetes often cause immense pain and suffering.
