Oral hygiene

As is well known, oral hygiene is very important. The removal of food/oral debris, the minimization of the microbial population in the mouth and throat, and the removal and prevention of plaque and calculus deposition are important for the enhancement of personal feelings of well-being (clean breath, mouth taste and mouth feel) and the prevention of oral diseases. Proper care of teeth and gums reduces the incidence of periodontal disease and dental cavities, thereby reducing the loss of teeth. Dental disease is caused by the accumulation of microscopic germs (bacteria) on the teeth and gums. These germs mix with saliva to form a transparent, sticky coating called bacterial plaque. Bacterial plaque generates acid which attacks the teeth, generally in the tiny crevices near the gum line between the teeth and the gum, resulting in tooth decay, tender and bleeding gums, foul breath, etc. Oral bacteria creates plaque, a sticky, colorless film of bacteria on the surfaces of teeth and other tissue, and these plaque forming bacteria create toxins. Over time the plaque begins combining with other materials and hardens into a rough, porous deposit, calculus. Diseases of the oral cavity are numerous, and include periodontitis, gingivitis, dental caries, halitosis, aphthous ulcers and plaque formation. In many of these diseases, microorganisms have been implicated as causative agents. For example, periodontal diseases, including periodontitis and gingivitis, are caused by bacteria that form plaques on the surfaces of the teeth at the gingival sulcus or pocket. Thus, the prevention and treatment of periodontal gum disease and early caries requires effective bacteria killing or growth suppression within all regions of the oral cavity. Good personal dental hygiene consists of regular brushing, regular flossing, regular use of plaque loosening rinses and, in some instances, fluoride rinses. Periodontal disease can be prevented by practicing good oral hygiene. Daily tooth brushing and flossing are the most important weapons against the formation of plaque. Brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day helps remove plaque from the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of the teeth. Oral hygiene compositions fall into two main categories: dentifrices and mouthwashes. Dentifrices generally contain an insoluble dentally acceptable abrasive which is utilised to physically cleanse the surface of the teeth. Dentifrices are generally provided in the form of solid or pasty preparations which can be readily applied to a toothbrush, for example, powders, pastes or viscous gels. Tooth decay and dental disease can be caused by bacterial action resulting from the formation of plaque about the teeth and interstices there between. The removal of plaque and entrapped food particles reduces the incidence of caries, gingivitis and mouth odors. Conventional brushing is inadequate for removal of all entrapped food particles and plaques. Dental flosses, tapes are recommended. Proper dental hygiene is not only important for dental health reasons, but for personal appearance considerations as well. One of the many techniques people employ to improve their personal appearance through dental hygiene is to have their teeth whitened. Teeth whitening techniques vary in cost, convenience, and effectiveness. A tooth is composed of an inner dentine layer and an outer hard enamel layer functioning to protect the inner parts of the teeth from infection and decay. The enamel layer is composed of about 96% inorganic matter and about 4% organic matter and water. Staining substances often penetrate the spaces, thus leading to a yellow staining of the teeth. For this reason, a lot of efforts have been made to make transparent or white teeth. Brushing one's teeth is one of the most important parts of healthy hygiene. In addition to freshening the breath and strengthening the teeth, proper brushing also kills the germs and bacteria that can grow inside the mouth. Toothbrushes provide many oral hygiene benefits. For example, toothbrushes remove plaque and food debris to help avoid tooth decay and disease. They remove stained pellicle from the surface of each tooth to help whiten the teeth. Toothpaste generally contains a polishing agent or abrasive, humectant, thickener or binder, water, foaming agent and flavoring agents.
